Iran, China discuss strategic cooperation

9 Dec 2013 - 8:35

Iran and China have underlined the importance of expanding Tehran-Beijing political, economic and security cooperation.
On Sunday, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani met with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Tehran and the two officials discussed the expansion of Tehran-Beijing cooperation.

Shamkhani pointed to Iran and China’s important position in the Middle East and East Asia and said the model of Tehran-Beijing cooperation is an example of independent political will for Asian cooperation despite Western bullying.

Shamkhani praised China for its stance on Iran’s nuclear energy program as well as its opposition to illegal sanctions against the Islamic Republic, saying cooperation between the two countries would play an important role in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue.

Yang, for his part, described Tehran’s achievements in recent nuclear talks with the Sextet of world powers - Russia, China, Britain, France, the US and Germany - as determining factor in the establishment of stability in the region and the entire world.

On November 24, Iran and the six major world powers sealed a historic accord in Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Tehran over its nuclear issue.

Yang stressed the need for more frequent negotiations between Iranian and Chinese officials over issues of regional and international importance, saying Tehran and Beijing can also cooperate on cultural, security, technological and counterterrorism issues aside from economic interaction.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views on the latest developments in the region, particularly the situation in Syrian and Afghanistan.
