Iran, Turkey can help end Syria crisis: Envoy

8 Dec 2013 - 11:16

The Turkish ambassador to Tehran says Iran and Turkey can play a significant role in the resolution of the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Umit Yardim said in an interview on Friday that the turmoil in Syria is a matter of concern not only for Iran and Turkey but also the entire region and the Islamic world.

Turkey like Iran regards a resolution to the Syrian crisis as highly significant and seeks the establishment of peace and security as well as the end of military conflicts in the region and Syria.

The envoy said that Iran and Turkey can play a vital role in settling the Syrian unrest as they are the two countries in the region directly affected by the crisis in the Arab country.

Yardim also said that both Tehran and Ankara stress the need for an immediate ceasefire, which he said is among major steps toward putting an end to the crisis.

In a joint press conference in Tehran on November 27, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu called for a ceasefire in Syria before the upcoming peace conference in Geneva.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011.

Statistics released by the United Nations show more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the conflict in the Arab country.

The UN has set January 22, 2014 as the date for the Geneva conference on the Syria crisis, which will be a follow-up to an earlier one held in June 2012.
