Iran enrichment right enshrined in Geneva deal: Araqchi

3 Dec 2013 - 22:12

Iran Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi says the country’s right to uranium enrichment has been enshrined in recent nuclear deal between Tehran and the six major world powers in Geneva.
“The Geneva negotiations were carried out with a win-win approach and consequently Iran’s nuclear rights including enrichment were recognized,” Araqchi said on Tuesday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans in The Hague on the sidelines of the 18th Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
“Dialog and negotiations are the only effective means to resolve international issues and problems,” Araqchi, who is a member of Iran's nuclear negotiating team, said.
On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council- the US, Russia, France, China, and Britain- plus Germany sealed an agreement to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Tehran’s confidence-building measure to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the Sextet agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Araqchi explained that Iran has no need for nuclear weapons based on its religious beliefs and security doctrine, adding, “Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful in nature.”
“Iran has always had and will have the readiness to resolve the existing ambiguities in proportion to the other side’s reciprocal steps,” the Iranian official pointed out.
He stressed the importance of implementing the Geneva agreement and lifting the “unconstructive” sanctions against Iran over its nuclear energy program.

The Dutch foreign minister, for his part, said his country completely supports the nuclear agreement between Iran and the six powers and pledged to play a positive role in the European Union to help implement the deal.

Timmermans expressed his country’s readiness to improve relations with Iran.
