Rouhani’s statistics on wheat imports flawed

28 Nov 2013 - 12:52

TEHRAN, Nov. 27 (MNA) – The president’s statistics in his last night TV interview have been the subject of speculations in social networks.
Mehr News reported that Rouhani’s statistics given in his interview in state TV Channel 1 had triggered a swarm of wheat imports Internet searches by Iranian users seeking the likelihood of statistics given by Hassan Rouhani last night.

Rouhani said last night that since 2005 Iran’s wheat imports had been raising a million ton every year, “such that our wheat imports the current year would amount to 7 million tons.”

However, statistics given in FAO (UN Food and Agricultural Organization) was different from what Rouhani presented the nation:

FAO report reveals that in 2005 Iran’s wheat production has been 14.5 million tons, with 222,000 tons imported. In 2011, FAO’s recent statistics published worldwide, said that Iran produced 13.5 million tons of wheat and imported 72,000 tons. For 2012, FAO predicted 14 million tons of wheat production.
