Turkish police have attacked a crowd of demonstrators protesting against the construction of a controversial wall between Turkey and Syria in the southeastern province of Mardin.
The protesters had gathered at the site to protest against the construction of the "wall of shame" that would be erected between the Turkish town of Nusaybin and the northern Syrian town of Qamishli.
The move was triggered by Nusaybin’s mayor, Ayse Gokkan, who went on a hunger strike on Thursday to voice her protest against the project. Her action prompted support from hundreds of locals who gathered at the site to protest the construction.
The riot police intervened with tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd.
They also sprayed pressurized water into Syria to disperse protesters who threw objects across the border.
Turkey's interior minister claims the structure will help protect citizens from mines planted in the area.
The border area is heavily populated on both sides by Kurds, many of whom have families on the other side of the frontier.
