The Arab Group at the United Nations has urged Saudi Arabia to maintain its membership in the UN Security Council.
The group said in a statement issued on Saturday that it hoped that Saudi Arabia maintains its membership in the Security Council and continues its “brave role in defending our issues specifically at the rostrum of the Security Council.”

The Arab Group at the United Nations includes Arab member states of the UN except Syria.

Saudi Arabia rejected its rotating seat at the Security Council after winning it on October 17, arguing that the Council is incapable of ending wars and resolving conflicts.

Saudis won a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the first time. Riyadh was to start a two-year term on the 15-member Council on January 1, along with Chad, Chile, Lithuania, and Nigeria.

The kingdom’s election came at a time when rights groups censured the country’s records on human rights, especially women’s rights.

Riyadh claimed the mechanisms and double standards in the Security Council prevent it from carrying out its duties in maintaining world peace, and that Saudi Arabia was seeking a more active role on Syria in key international bodies.

Saudi Arabia is widely held as a major supporter of the foreign-backed militants operating inside Syria.

Saudi Arabia has also assisted the Bahraini regime in its violent crackdown on peaceful protesters in the Persian Gulf island nation.
