TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army's border guard control foiled foreign militants' attempts to penetrate into the Syrian soil via the country's western border with Lebanon in Tartus province.
The army blocked the path of the militants who were heading to Syria from Lebanon’s Aboudiyeh border village, FNA dispatches reported.
FNA dispatches also said that a large number of militants were killed in the clashes in Tartus province.
The battles between the Syrian army units and armed rebels, which started near Aziziyeh border village of Tartus, has spread to other border regions in the province.
Tartus province is one of the fourteen provinces of Syria. It is situated in Western Syria, bordering Lebanon to the South, the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Lattakia province in the North, and Homs and Hama provinces to the East.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against the Syrian police, border guards, statesmen, army and civilians being reported across the country.
Thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.
The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
