A senior Iranian lawmaker says the West should take major steps to relax and lift “completely illegal” US-engineered sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear energy program.
“There is a quid pro quo for every step taken. If new steps are to be taken while [Iran is] under sanctions, it will definitely be unacceptable because confidence-building is a two-way street,” Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Majlis Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Friday.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the unsubstantiated claim as an excuse to impose illegal sanctions against Tehran.

The bans come on top of four rounds of US-instigated UN Security Council sanctions against Iran under the same pretext.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The parliamentarian added that Iran has never had any problems with the inspection to its nuclear facilities and explained that the country’s nuclear sites have always been under the supervision of the IAEA.
“We have no problem if more inspections are to be carried out because we have full confidence in ourselves and know that our nuclear [energy] program is completely peaceful,” the Iranian legislator said.
Boroujerdi’s remarks came after Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain - plus Germany held two days of negotiations over Tehran’s civilian nuclear work behind closed doors in the Swiss city of Geneva on October 15-16.

During a meeting on October 15, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif presented Iran’s proposal titled "Closing an Unnecessary Crisis, Opening a New Horizon" to EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton, and the representatives of the six countries. The two sides agreed to keep the details of the proposal confidential for the time being.
