Araqchi, Sherman hold bilateral meeting in Geneva

15 Oct 2013 - 22:51

Top nuclear negotiators of Iran and the United States have met on the sidelines of the new round of talks between Tehran and the six major world powers over Iran’s nuclear energy program in Geneva.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for International and Legal Affairs Abbas Araqchi and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman held a bilateral meeting on Tuesday after the first day of the two-day negotiations over Iran’s nuclear energy program came to an end, IRNA reported.

Earlier in the day, US State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf said during a break in the nuclear talks between Iran and the six world world powers - the US, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany - that Washington would “welcome” a bilateral meeting with the Iranian diplomatic team in Geneva.

Iran and the six world powers held two rounds of talks on Tuesday. The first round was held in the morning, attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton. Zarif and Ashton were not present in the afternoon round of talks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif presented Iran’s proposal titled "Closing an Unnecessary Crisis, and Opening a New Horizon” during the morning session of Tuesday talks.

According to Araqchi, the details of the proposed package, which was expected to be discussed during the afternoon session, will remain confidential as long as the talks have not concluded.
