Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi has escaped an assassination attempt, which has left at least five people injured in the north of the country.
On Wednesday, a car bomb and a subsequent roadside bomb exploded in the south of the city of Mosul in Nineveh province, where Nujaifi’s convoy was passing, AFP quoted the parliament speaker’s office as saying.
The office added that Nujaifi was not travelling along with the convoy as he was on his way to Jordan.
Following the incident, Nujaifi released a statement, in which he condemned the attack and censured the country’s security forces for "inability to protect citizens... and confront the forces of terrorism."
Earlier this year, Nineveh Governor Atheel al-Nujaifi, Osama's brother, emerged unscathed after a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy.
Elsewhere in the violence-stricken country, attacks claimed nine lives on Wednesday.
A roadside bomb blasted near a truck carrying workers in the south of the capital Baghdad, killing eight people and wounding seven others. A policeman was also shot dead by militants near the northern city of Kirkuk.
According to the United Nations, a total of 1,057 Iraqis, including 928 civilians, were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in terrorist attacks throughout the country in July -- the deadliest month since 2008.
Violence also left almost 1,000 people dead and more than 2,000 wounded in Iraq in September, according to the UN.
Iraq’s Interior Ministry has said that militants have launched an open war in Iraq and they want to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.
“The country is currently facing an open war from bloodthirsty sectarian forces that aim to plunge the country into chaos,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement issued on July 30.
