A senior official at the United Nations has described the outcome of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to New York to attend the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly as important and constructive.
Martin Nesirky, spokesman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, said on Tuesday that President Rouhani’s visit with the UN chief, his speech at the General Assembly, and his telephone conversation with US President Barack Obama were among the most dominant and significant achievements of Rouhani’s visit.
He added that Rouhani and Ban had constructive and successful talks on the continuation of dialogue over Iran’s nuclear energy program, the resolution of the Syrian crisis, and the enhancement of cooperation between Tehran and the United Nations.
Nesirki further noted that President Rouhani’s stances have helped open up a window for further interaction between Iran and the international community.
Rouhani delivered his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 24.
On September 25, he addressed the special session of the Nuclear Disarmament Conference as the current chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
The Iranian president also addressed the opening of the NAM Ministerial Meeting on Cooperation for the Rule of Law at the International Level, held at the UN headquarters in New York on September 27.
Rouhani received a call from Obama on September 27 as he was in a car heading to the John F. Kennedy International Airport to fly back to Tehran.
The two heads of state stressed Tehran and Washington’s political will to swiftly resolve the West’s dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program, and exchanged viewpoints on various topics, including cooperation on different regional issues.
The phone conversation was the first direct communication between the Iranian and US presidents since Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979.
