A senior Iranian lawmaker says recent statements by Turkish President Abdullah Gul about Iran’s key role in Syria shows Ankara’s “realistic” view of Tehran.
“The Turkish president’s remarks about the Geneva 2 meeting [on Syria] were real and without Iran’s presence the session will bear no result,” Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdisaid Monday.

Addressing reporters in New York on Sunday, the Turkish president said it would be “unrealistic” to hold any discussion about the ongoing crisis in Syria without the presence of Iran.
“Frankly, it’s unrealistic to talk about Syria without Iran. There has yet to be a common understanding with Iran, but you cannot exclude it,” Gul stated.
The Iranian lawmaker reiterated that Turkey, as a friend country to Iran, can act successfully to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria by adopting a proper stance.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. A very large number of the militants operating inside Syria are reportedly foreign nationals.

In a recent statement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the number of Syrian refugees, who have fled the country’s 29-month-long conflict, reached two million.

The UN refugee agency further said some 4.2 million people have also been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country.

On May 7, Russia and the US agreed in the Russian capital Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.

The Syrian government has already announced that it is ready to take part in the peace conference without any preconditions in an effort to help end over two years of deadly turmoil in the country.
