US must address Iran with respect: FM spokeswoman

16 Sep 2013 - 22:08

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman says the remarks made by President Barack Obama in an ABC interview show “illogical and illegal” insistence on war, urging the US to address Iran respectfully.
Marzieh Afkham was referring to the Sunday interview with ABC in which Obama said the US is still prepared to “strike” Iran over its nuclear program despite the decision to back off a military threat against Syria.

“I think what the Iranians understand is that the nuclear issue is a far larger issue for us than the chemical weapons issue, that the threat... against Israel that a nuclear Iran poses is much closer to our core interests,” the US president stated.

Afkham expressed hope on Monday that the Obama administration would learn from its unsuccessful past experiences of using the language of threat with the Iranian nation.

She added that the Obama administration must realize that the language of threat will have no impact on the Iranian nation and government’s resolve to protect their nuclear rights including the right to enrichment.

Afkham stated that the only way to interact with Iran was to use the “language of respect.”

She emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly verified that there has been no diversion in Iran’s nuclear energy program.
“As President [Hassan] Rouhani recently announced, we are against dragging on the nuclear negotiations and believe that if the other side has the necessary resolve a solution to this issue can be quickly found,” Afkham said.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Tehran strongly rejects the claim against its nuclear energy program, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
