Saudis behind Iraq violence to undermine government: Analyst

15 Sep 2013 - 14:03

Abetted by some regional states such as Saudi Arabia, some Iraqi political factions have been orchestrating the recent spate of violence in Iraq to undermine the Iraqi government’s credibility in the lead-up to elections, a political analyst tells Press TV.
In a Saturday interview, Saad al-Muttalibi from State of Law Coalition attributed the surge in violence over the recent months to “certain political parties in Iraq that are supported from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.”
“The regional powers headed by Saudi Arabia and Turkey - and naturally Qatar is also involved in this matter - are trying to undermine the efforts of the government by supporting the al-Qaeda organization and those insurgents that are close to al-Qaeda. And naturally the old al-Ba’ath party is still active here in Iraq,” he noted.
Muttalibi argued that those behind the ongoing atrocities seek to blame the government for being incapable of safeguarding the national security and thus dissuade the public from reelecting the same politicians in the parliamentary elections slated to be held in the spring of 2014.

The political activist noted that the Iraqi people are aware of the “trick.” He added, “The efforts of Saudi Arabia will just go unfruitful like in the last election.”

Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

According to the United Nations, more than 800 people were killed across Iraq in various acts of terrorism in August alone.

UN figures also say that over 4,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Iraq so far in 2013, with Baghdad province hit worst.

The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Ba’ath party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
