Bomb explosion kills 3 Iraqis in Kirkuk

12 Sep 2013 - 17:40

At least three people, including a soldier, have been killed and 12 others wounded in a bomb blast in Iraq's northern city of Kirkuk.
The blast took place on Thursday after a bomber exploded his vehicle in the parking lot of a military base in Kirkuk.

Iraq is experiencing its worst violence since 2008, with more than 4,000 people reported to have been killed so far this year.

On Wednesday, 39 people were killed and many others wounded in bomb blasts and shooting incidents across Iraq.

In the deadliest attack, a bomb explosion outside the Tamimi mosque in the Waziriyah neighborhood of the capital Baghdad claimed at least 30 lives. The bombing occurred while evening worshipers were leaving the mosque.

Insurgents affiliated with al-Qaeda have stepped up their attacks in Iraq over the past monthsm targeting both Sunni and Shia Muslims.

The United Nations said on August 1 a total of 1,057 Iraqis were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in the month of July, making it the country's deadliest month since 2008.

The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Ba’ath party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
