Iranian and Turkish anti-narcotics authorities have agreed to forge closer cooperation in fighting illicit drugs.
In a Thursday meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul, head of the Iranian anti-narcotics police, General Ali Moayedi, who is leading a delegation during an official visit to the country, held talks with head of Istanbul’s anti-drugs police, Saleh Cemen, and discussed strategies to further deepen mutual collaboration.

The two officials also underscored the need for both countries to exchange intelligence and experience, and keep each other informed of the latest development on fighting drugs in their respective countries.
Istanbul’s drug enforcement chief stated after his meeting with Moayedi that they discussed ways to expand police cooperation between the two nations, which are both major corridors for the smuggling of illicit drugs from east to west.
He further emphasized that one of the key strategies to fight drug trade is the timely exchange of intelligence between countries, adding Turkey has good cooperation with Iran in that regard.

Iran lies on a transit corridor between opium-producing Afghanistan and drug dealers and abusers in Europe. To counter drug trafficking, the Iranian government has deployed thousands of security personnel along its eastern borders and has erected over 1,000 kilometers of embankments, canals, trenches, and cement walls.

Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, about nearly 4,000 Iranian security personnel have lost their lives in the country’s relentless anti-drug campaign.
