Footage shows brutal killing in Egypt

15 Aug 2013 - 13:01

Amateur footage has emerged from Egypt, showing a civilian woman being shot and killed purportedly by regime forces in the recent fatal crackdown in the country.
The video was uploaded on the internet following the Wednesday crackdown, during which Egyptian security forces moved in to clear out thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi from two camps - one near the Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque in Cairo and a smaller one in Nahda Square in Giza.

Egypt’s Health Ministry said over 230 people died in the clashes and more than 2,000 people were wounded across the country. According to the Egyptian Interior Ministry, 43 policemen were also killed in the violence.

However, the Muslim Brotherhood put the death toll far higher, saying that at least 2,200 people had died in the crackdown on Morsi’s supporters.

Egypt’s interim government declared a curfew in Cairo and 11 other provinces in an effort to control the spiraling crisis.

Tension first intensified in Egypt on July 3, when the Egyptian army removed Morsi from office. The army also suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.

The Wednesday crackdown, however, may be well on its way to further worsening the situation and turning it into a more serious conflict.
