TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran and Afghanistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on increasing cooperation between the two neighboring states in security and law enforcement fields, an Iranian official said on Tuesday.


"In a recent visit by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to Tehran, the Secretary of Afghanistan's National Security Council accompanied him and an MoU on security and law enforcement cooperation was endorsed between the secretariats of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and Afghanistan's National Security Council," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi said in his weekly press conference in Tehran today.

He said that the MoU includes cooperation between the two countries in law enforcement, intelligence exchange, border control, fighting drug trafficking and terrorism, etc.

The spokesman added that certain media had mistakenly reported that Tehran and Kabul had inked strategic cooperation agreement which is not true and the MoU only pertains to mutual law enforcement and security cooperation.

Iran is one of the most important donors to Afghanistan which has kept its promises to help to the reconstruction of the war-hit country.

Iran has built some roads, power transmission lines, and border stations, among the other infrastructure projects which would better link the two nations.

Iran has also contributed more than $50mln annually to Afghan anti-narcotics efforts in the last decade.
