final decision about Tehran’s accession to Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) and the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (aka the Palermo Convention) comes within the purview of Iran’s Expediency Council, a spokesperson said.
According to The Iran Project, Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Saturday, the spokesman for Iran’s Constitutional Council said plans for the country to join the CFT policies and the Palermo Convention have already been ratified by the Iranian Parliament.
Considering that the Constitutional Council has expressed its view about those conventions, the final decision has been left to the discretion of the Expediency Council according to Iran’s legal system, Hadi Tahan Nazif added.
Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) involves investigating, analyzing, deterring and preventing sources of funding for activities intended to achieve political, religious or ideological goals through violence and the threat of violence against civilians.
The UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime was also adopted by the General Assembly resolution 55/25 in November 2000. It is known as the main international instrument in the fight against transnational organized crime. The convention opened for signature by member states at a high-level political conference convened for that purpose in Palermo, Italy, in December 2000.
