Iran-Lebanon ties significant for regional peace, security: Rohani

5 Aug 2013 - 12:12

Iranian President Hassan Rohani describes Tehran-Beirut cooperation as significant for regional security and stability.
“Cooperation between Iran and Lebanon is of high importance for the establishment of peace, stability and security in the region,” Rohani said in a meeting with his Lebanese opposite number Michel Suleiman in Tehran on Sunday.

The meeting was held following Rohani’s swearing-in ceremony in Majlis attended by Iranian lawmakers and senior officials as well as delegations from over 50 countries.

On Saturday and in an official ceremony, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei endorsed Rohani for a four-year term in office as Iran’s new president.

Rohani won the June 14 presidential election with 50.7 percent of a total of 36, 704, 156 ballots. Voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent.

Rohani said the Iranian nation admires the resistance of Lebanese people against aggression and occupation.

The Iranian president also expressed hope that bilateral ties between the two countries would further expand in the future.

Suleiman, for his part, said the Islamic Republic played a key role in resolving regional conflicts.

The Lebanese president said Rohani’s inauguration speech - where he stressed the need for peace and stability in the region - will help begin a new chapter in regional dialog.

In another meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Rohani said Iran and Afghanistan share numerous commonalities and enjoy enormous potential that could be tapped to boost reciprocal ties.

Karzai, in turn, praised Iran’s support for the Afghan nation and government, adding that Iran has always welcomed the people of his country.
