US Republican presidential candidate raps Biden’s Iran payment

12 Aug 2023 - 16:33

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, a Republican presidential candidate, has lambasted President Joe Biden's approach to Iran, accusing him of giving in to "Iran's tactics of blackmail and extortion."

In a tweet, DeSantis voiced his concern about a recent unfreezing of Iran's $6 billion assets, claiming that it could inadvertently support Iran's nuclear ambitions, terrorism, and oppressive actions.

DeSantis believes that the payment will help Iran build nuclear weapons, support terrorism, oppress the Iranian people, and assist Russia. He claims that Biden's appeasement and weakness are emboldening Iran to attack the US and its allies, and bringing Iran closer to nuclear weapons.

These comments come amid debates over the Biden administration's foreign policy and national security approach. DeSantis accuses Biden of rewarding Iran for alleged hostage-taking incidents, which he believes could incentivize further acts of hostage-taking.

DeSantis's concerns reflect worries about the lack of transparency and accountability in the payment, potentially setting a dangerous precedent. He argues that the situation could pose risks to global stability and security.

DeSantis also criticizes what he calls "disastrous deals" that endanger national security and calls for a shift towards a stance of "maximum pressure" to counter Iran's perceived malign influence.

On the other hand, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced that the process of releasing billions of dollars from Iran's seized assets in South Korea by the US has begun. The ministry states that Iran has received assurances regarding America's commitment to its obligations in this matter.

The ministry emphasizes that the decision on how to utilize these unfrozen resources lies with Iran, and they will allocate them to address the country's various needs. They also mention that the release of innocent Iranian prisoners detained in the US will happen shortly.

However, it is important to note that prisoners sought by the US still remain in Iran.
