UN official vows to help relax Iran's sanctions

26 Apr 2023 - 16:09

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths hailed his constructive talks here in Tehran, saying that efforts will be made for loosening sanctions against Iran.

Speaking to reporters, Griffiths said that the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and the Government have had close cooperation with the UN regarding the preparation and response to humanitarian crises.

He said that he has discussed capacities for materializing peace in Yemen.

He also referred to UN measures in line with preventing famine in Yemen.

Griffiths termed peace as the most important precondition for any aid to Yemen.

Regarding the UN humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, he said that the countries are committed to help $4.6 billion to Afghans.

He noted that Taliban was reminded about its responsibilities with regard to women and girls.

The United States under former president Donald Trump reinstated crippling sanctions on Iran after unilaterally walking out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May 2018, despite Iran’s full compliance with the terms of the agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Although Trump failed to achieve his professed goals with the so-called “maximum pressure” campaign, the waves of sanctions took a heavy toll on ordinary Iranians, including those battling life-threatening diseases.

The sanctions, maintained by Trump’s successor, have restricted the financial channels necessary to pay for basic goods and medicine, undermining supply chains by limiting the number of suppliers willing to facilitate sales of humanitarian goods to the country.

Iran has repeatedly denounced the sanctions as an act of “economic war”, “economic terrorism”, and “medical terrorism”.
