Cuban Ambassador to Iran Alberto González Casals said that his country is interested in expanding cooperation with Iran in medicine production.

González Casals on Wednesday, heading a delegation of Cuban experts and businessmen, toured Shahid Qazi Pharmaceutical Company in Tabriz, the capital city of East Azarbaijan Province, northwestern Iran.

The Cuban envoy referred to Tehran-Havana cooperation on producing a COVID-19 vaccine, and said that the two sides can expand their cooperation to other fields of the pharmaceutical industry.

Managing director of Shahid Qazi Company Saeed Basmanji, for his part, said that the Cuban delegation has expressed its willingness to supply some medicines to their country through his company.

The COVID-19 vaccine jointly produced by Tehran and Havana is called Pasteurcovac in Iran and Soberana-2 in Cuba.

It was developed by Cuba’s Finlay Institute of Vaccines and Iran’s Pasteur Institute.

The two sides managed to produce the vaccine despite restrictions both face because of US sanctions.

Iran and Cuba are opposed to what they see as US hegemony in the world and have in the past decades stood up against those policies.
