Militants torch NATO tanker in southwestern Pakistan

7 Jul 2013 - 18:07

Pro-Taliban militants in the troubled southwestern Pakistan have set fire to at least one NATO tanker carrying supplies to US-led forces in neighboring Afghanistan.
Local officials say two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at the container in Dhadar area of Bolan district on Sunday.

“The container was forced to stop after gun fire, at which point the armed assailants set it on fire,” the daily Dawn newspaper quoted a senior security official as saying.

Meanwhile, Pakistani security forces sealed the area off and begun a search operation in the volatile region.

Hundreds of NATO tankers and containers have been destroyed in different parts of Pakistan during the past three years.

Pakistani security forces have launched several operations in the troubled northwestern and southwestern provinces in a bid to flush out militants from the troubled regions.

Despite the Pakistani government's operations against Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and associated groups, they have been able to spread their influence in various regions of the country and kill thousands of people.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in its so-called war against terrorism.
