US media cartel blacks out grassroots demands: Analyst

6 Jul 2013 - 12:37

The media cartel in the US seeks to cover up Washington’s illegal actions and black out popular demands in the country, a political analyst tells Press TV.
“We have a granite-like almost impervious mythmaking machine in Washington D.C., a propaganda machine that owns and controls the mass media as well,” Mark Mason said in a Friday interview.
The analyst slammed the prevailing corruption in the US media, saying, “They (US media) don't cover grassroots issues. They don't cover issues regarding violations of the Constitution by the president of the United States.”
While there are so much of the grassroots movements across the United States, Mason said, the mainstream media turn a blind eye to those developments.

He pointed to the US propaganda strategies in the coverage of the news regarding American whistleblower Edward Snowden, adding the US media portray the situation “as if Snowden is some kind of a criminal which is highly biased. He is a ...hero with regards to civil liberties in the United States.”

Snowden, a former CIA employee, revealed two top secret US government spying programs, under which the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been spying on a global scale.

The NSA scandal took even broader dimensions when Snowden revealed information about US espionage activities targeting countries friendly to the US.

Snowden has been holed up at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport since June 23, when he traveled from Hong Kong to avoid extradition to the US.

He has already sought asylum in 20 countries, namely China, India, Cuba, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, France, Germany and Iceland.

Washington has asked these countries not to give asylum to Snowden.
