Iranian MPs to visit nuclear sites in coming weeks

3 Feb 2020 - 17:00

Tasnim – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mojtaba Zonnour said the members of the commission plan to pay visits to the country’s nuclear sites in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Tasnim, Zonnour said according to the schedule, the new round of visits by the lawmakers to the nuclear sites will start after the upcoming parliamentary elections.

In the new round of the visits to the nuclear facilities, the process of scaling back the country’s obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), will be examined, the parliamentarian stated.

The 11th round of the parliamentary elections and the mid-term election of the Assembly of Experts will be held on February 21.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.

Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal – France, Germany and the UK– have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.

The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal.

Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
