An Iranian lawmaker has dismissed any connection between Iran’s nuclear energy program and the ongoing crisis in Syria, as alleged by US Senator John McCain.
“Iran’s [Islamic] establishment and people have no fear of baseless claims and remarks by the US and the West, and do not consider acquisition of peaceful nuclear energy to be dependent on decisions by Washington officials,” said Mansour Haqiqatpour, a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Wednesday.

In an interview published on July 1, McCain said supplying anti-Syria Takfiri militants with weapons is an important step to deter Iran from continuing with its nuclear energy program.

The Iranian legislator further said, “The resolution of Iran’s nuclear dossier is not linked to the massacre of Syrian people by extremist and terrorist groups, and it requires reasonability and probity of Western authorities.”

“This superficial and irrational attitude leads to [the adoption of] wrong decisions which prove the emptiness of US policies in the world day after day,” he stated

“Supplying arms and military equipment to terrorists in Syria is a blatant violation of human rights and supporting this move flagrantly signifies US politicians’ lack of commitment to the concept of human rights and the international law,” Haqiqatpour stated.

On June 14, US President Barack Obama ordered his administration to provide the militants in Syria with weapons, which include assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles.

The West, spearheaded by the United States and Israel, accuses Iran of following non-civilian purposes in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has vehemently rejected the allegation, arguing that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
