1 Jul 2013 - 22:59

Iran’s Attorney General Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says eight Slovak citizens and one Iranian have been arrested in the central Iranian province of Isfahan on charges of photography of restricted areas.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, he added that the detainees have smuggled “illegal equipment” into Iran and photographed restricted areas in Isfahan Province.

Mohseni-Ejei, who is also the Iranian Judiciary spokesman, noted that Slovakia’s Embassy in Tehran has been informed of the case and given consular access to the detainees.

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi said a number of Slovak citizens have been arrested for violating the Islamic Republic’s law.

“These individuals had come to the Islamic Republic of Iran as tourists, but their actions and behavior were unconventional, and have been arrested by law enforcement officials for violating our country’s law,” he said.

Slovakia's Foreign Ministry said on June 28 that a number of the country’s citizens had been detained in Iran.

“Our diplomats in Tehran are in touch with the arrested citizens and the Iranian authorities,” Foreign Ministry spokesman, Boris Gandel said.
