Rouhani: Iran’s peace initiative faced no opposition at UN

4 Oct 2019 - 11:58

Tasnim – President of Iran Hassan Rouhani said Tehran’s new initiative for regional security, known as the “Hormuz Peace Endeavor”, did not meet any opposition when proposed at a recent meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking at a weekly cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday, President Rouhani said his participation at the UN gathering and the tight meetings with the world leaders shattered the atmosphere that the enemies sought to create against Iran.

He said Iran was the harbinger of peace in the UNGA by putting forward the Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE).

“This initiative was (developed) considering various issues and from the viewpoint of different countries. Nobody could oppose this plan, even if somebody had been reluctant to voice support for it,” he added.

As regards France’s push to force Iran to enter talks with the US, President Rouhani reiterated that the US can once again attend the JCPOA meetings provided that it lifts all sanctions against Iran and that Tehran sells its oil freely and receives the payments.

The road to talks is still open, in case the Iranian nation’s rights and dignity are respected, he added.

“The entire world has come to the conclusion that the US exit from the JCPOA was wrong and that the US will get nowhere,” Rouhani noted.

The president also stated that all European leaders have admitted in New York that the Islamic Republic’s power has increased in comparison with the previous year.

Rouhani presented the Hormuz peace initiative while delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday and invited all regional countries to participate in it.

“The initiative is based on the fact that all regional countries are duty-bound to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region. Together with the international community, they have common interests in maintaining freedom of navigation and energy transfer,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said at a UN Security Council meeting on September 25.

These regional efforts are necessary to prevent war, conflict, violence, extremism, terrorism and sectarian tensions, Zarif said, adding that Tehran’s proposal was aimed at enhancing solidarity, mutual understanding as well as peaceful and friendly relations between countries in the region in order to guarantee the territorial integrity and political independence of regional states.
