Senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi has confirmed reports about the arrest of a number of Slovak citizens in Iran on charges of possessing unconventional equipments.
“These individuals were in possession of equipments that civilians usually do not have access to,” the chairman of Iran’s Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Saturday.
“The detained Slovak citizens violated Iran’s domestic law and were present in sensitive areas; therefore, they were arrested by the security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Boroujerdi added.
Slovakia's Foreign Ministry said on June 28 that a number of the country’s citizens had been detained in Iran.
“Our diplomats in Tehran are in touch with the arrested citizens and the Iranian authorities,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Boris Gandel said.
Media reports had earlier said that five or six Slovak paragliders were arrested in Iran “for taking pictures of military objects from above.”
