Iran summons Kenyan envoy over detention of 2 nationals

Tasnim – Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the Kenyan ambassador to Tehran over the detention of two Iranian citizens in Kenya, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Sunday.

Following a ruling by a Kenyan court, violating an earlier verdict on the release of two Iranian prisoners, the Foreign Ministry summoned Kenya's ambassador to Tehran on Saturday to voice Iran's protest against the recent ruling, Qassemi said.

During the meeting, the director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Department for African Affairs expressed Iran’s dissatisfaction with the “unfair” verdict of the Kenyan court.

The Foreign Ministry official also told the Kenyan diplomat that the Islamic Republic had urged its ambassador to Kenya to come to Tehran for further consultations.

During the meeting, the Kenyan ambassador also stated that he would convey Iran’s protest to the African country’s government.

The Supreme Court of Kenya issued a verdict to release the two Iranian citizens in February last year but with “non-judicial interventions” in this process, the Kenyan Police refused to act based on the verdict and prevented the return of the two, Qassemi stated.

Unfortunately on Friday, the Supreme Court of Kenya violated an earlier decision and returned the two Iranians to jail, he added.
