A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic has always supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity in all international circles.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has defended the Azerbaijan Republic’s territorial integrity in all global circles, and Iran’s Majlis has always advocated this policy,” said Kazem Jalali in a meeting with Azerbaijani Parliament Vice-Speaker Ziafat Askerov in Baku on Thursday.
The Iranian MP thanked Azerbaijan’s government for its friendly stances with regard to Tehran at sensitive junctures, expressing hope that mutual ties will further expand during the future administration of Iranian President-elect Dr. Hassan Rohani as he attaches special importance to the promotion of relations with neighboring countries.
Askerov, for his part, said strengthening parliamentary cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan would play an instrumental role in the enhancement of bilateral relations.
He reiterated Baku’s backing for Tehran and said Azerbaijan would never allow others to use its territory against neighboring Iran.
The Azeri official also extended his felicitations to Rohani on his victory in the June 14 race.
Rohani secured an outright win in Iran’s presidential election by garnering more than half of the 36.7 million ballots cast.
Nearly 50.5 million Iranians were eligible to participate in the presidential election. The voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent, according to the Interior Ministry.
