Spokesman rejects US spy allegations as Iranophobia

18 Feb 2019 - 16:52

FNA - The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said the allegation that Monica E. Witt, a former US Air Force intelligence specialist, has worked for Iran's security agencies as a spy is baseless and raised by the US to promote Iranophobia.

"There are, of course, many such reports in the US media that pursue Iranophobia and attempt to confront Iran," Bahram Qassemi said in a press conference in Tehran on Monday.

"I do not have such information and there is no such evidence. It is not correct and we view it in the framework of Iranophobia," he added.

The US prosecutors have accused a former US Air Force officer of spying for Iran in an elaborate operation that targeted her fellow intelligence officers, the American media reported.

Monica Witt, who allegedly defected to Iran in 2013, had previously worked as a US counterintelligence officer.

According to the FBI, Witt was last seen in Southwest Asia in July 2013.

Prosecutors say Witt had been granted the highest level of US security clearance and worked in the US Air Force from 1997 to 2008.

Witt is accused of sharing US government secrets, including the name of agents and specifics of operations, with Iran as early as January 2012.
