A new nationwide survey shows that Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is leading the race for the presidency, with Mohsen Rezaei and Hassan Rohani coming next.
According to the survey conducted on June 9 across the country by a credible institution, 23.4 percent of the respondents said they will vote for Qalibaf, who is running on the principlist ticket.

Independent candidate, Rezaei, and reformist Rohani are trailing behind with 14.2 and 13.2 percent of the votes, respectively.

Rezaei is the secretary of the Expediency Council and Rohani is President of the Expediency Council’s Center for Strategic Affairs.

Some 9.1 percent of the respondents said they will vote for another principlist candidate, Saeed Jalili, with 8.7 percent mentioning principlist Ali Akbar Velayati as their candidate of choice.

Jalili is Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator and Velayati advises Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on foreign affairs.

Only 1.5 percent of the interviewees chose former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi.

Two presidential candidates, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and former First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref withdrew their candidacy bids respectively on Monday and early Tuesday.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. Nearly 50.5 million Iranians are eligible to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
