Qalibaf says will increase regional relations

10 Jun 2013 - 11:46

Iranian presidential candidate Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf says he will boost regional cooperation in his foreign policy if elected in the upcoming election.
The Tehran mayor made the remarks in a Q&A session on the Iranian Television on Sunday.
“We believe we should first adopt the approach of regionalism as a principle. I think one of the important subjects in the Islamic Republic is Iran’s geopolitical position. It has provided Iran with a lot of exceptional opportunities,” the presidential candidate said.
He added that the country should forge closer ties with regional states, because it is the flag-holder of peace and stability in the Muslim world.

In Iran’s upcoming presidential election, Qalibaf will be competing against lawmaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, Hassan Rohani, the director of the Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council, Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, former First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref, former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi, and former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the candidates.

Iranians go to the polls in the nation’s 11th presidential election on June 14. Over 66,000 polling stations will be set up across the country. Expatriates will also be able to cast ballots at 285 polling stations that will be set up in foreign countries.
