IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday defended Finance Ministry’s performance, saying that under the current conditions, its function is positive and acceptable.


Rouhani made the remarks after Majlis decided to impeach Finance Minister Masoud Karbasian over the country’s economic woes.

He hoped that the minister’s explanations will help remove ambiguities faced by MPs.

A motion signed by 33 MPs calling for questioning the minister was presented to the Majlis presiding board on Sunday, paving the way for his impeachment.

According to the Article 225 of the Parliament regulations, the finance minister is obliged to show up in the chamber within 10 days and answer MPs questions.

The worsening economic conditions, in particular the devluation of the rial, is said to be the main reason behind calls for the impeachment of Karbasian.
