UN chief open to 'building' upon Iran nuclear agreement



Sputnik - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to actively support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran but is amenable to enhancements, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing on Monday.



"The secretary-general strongly supports the JCPOA asan important diplomatic achievement and is also open onbuilding onthe JCPOA," Dujarric told reporters. "The secretary-general has made his views known both publicly and privately We believe the JCPOA contributes toregional peace and security."


Guterres' statement comes afterthe foreign ministers ofGermany, the United Kingdom and Francehave issued a joint statement saying thattheir countries will stay inthe JCPOA even if the United States pulls outof it.

The Trump administration has announced that it is reassessing whether topull the United States outof the JCPOA which was signed byIran withthe five permanent members ofthe UN Security Council plus Germany and the European Union onJuly 14, 2015.

The US president has been criticizing the JCPOA, more widely known asthe Iran nuclear deal, which was negotiated byhis predecessor then-President Barack Obama, ever sincehis election campaign. Trump threatened towithdraw Washington fromthe agreement if the "flaws" init are not fixed. The United States is expected toannounce its decision onthe agreement beforethe May 12 deadline.
