Commander: Makran coasts Iran’s golden gate to world

24 Dec 2017 - 22:59

Tasnim – Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi highlighted the strategic significance of the country’s southeastern coasts by the Sea of Oman, saying the Makran region provides a golden link with the world.

“As Iran’s major coasts, Makran coasts are a golden gate for links with the world,” Rear Admiral Khanzadi said in a gathering of Navy commanders in Iran’s northern city of Rasht on Sunday.

He also said that development of the coasts of Makran would lay the foundation for a “maritime civilization.”

Pointing to the strategic position of Iran at the center of the world’s “strategic energy oval”, the commander warned that the global arrogance has focused efforts to bring chaos to the region and create division.

The coasts of Makran, also known as Pasabandar, is located in Iran's southeastern region, next to the Oman Sea.

The strategic area has attracted the attention of many Iranian decision-makers and military officials, particularly after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the need for development of the region.

In November 2014, in a meeting with high-ranking Navy commanders, Ayatollah Khamenei said, "The issue of development of the coasts of Makran is also among those basic tasks, and the plans for that region should be carried out more rapidly."

The Navy is now developing a naval base at the coastal area of Pasabandar.
