Iran speaker arrives in Moscow to attend anti-drug conference

IRNA – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani arrived in the Russian capital, Moscow, to attend an international conference on drug trafficking which is held in the presence of MPs from 44 countries.


A number of Iranian lawmakers, including the Chairman of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi, accompany Ali Larijani during his trip to Russia.

Larijani is expected to attend 'Parliamentary Members vs. Drugs' conference and met with the Russian officials during his two-day trip to Moscow.

He told reporters before his departure that 'Effective fight against drug needs fighting main sources of this current.

The official referred to the increase of drug production in Afghanistan despite NATO's claim for fighting the poppy cultivation in the country, and said that drug trafficking is a source for financing terrorist groups.

He called for the regional parliaments' action to eradicate the root causes of drug smuggling.

According to the Russian Tass News Agency, lawmakers from 44 countries will attend the international conference dubbed 'Parliamentary Members vs. Drugs' that will be held in the State Duma on December 4, State Duma Vice Speaker and head of the United Russia faction Sergey Neverov said at a briefing in the run-up to the forum.
