Tasnim – The new commander of Tehran’s Law Enforcement Force said mourning ceremonies marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions were held in the capital in full security.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said the mourning ceremonies of the lunar month of Muharram, particularly on Tasua and Ashura, the 9th and 10th days of Muharram falling on Saturday and Sunday this year, were held in full peace and security.
He further emphasized that given the massive presence of the Law Enforcement forces and honorary police officers, as well as the good cooperation of the people over the past 48 hours, there were no security problems in Tehran.
Ashura marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his 72 faithful companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Every year on Ashura, millions of Shiites around the world, dressed in black, take to the streets and mosques to mourn the sad occasion.
Muharram ceremonies represent the never-ending and unswerving stance of the truth against falsehood and the humanity’s struggle against tyranny, the cause for which Imam Hussein (AS) sacrificed his life.
In Iran, devotees in cities, towns, and villages across the country listened to elegies recounting the indescribably tragic events in the Battle of Karbala.
The rituals are observed in ultimate magnificence in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, the latter of which hosts Imam Hussein’s (AS) holy shrine.
