Iran FM attends several meetings in New York

Septemebr 22, The Iran Project – Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif, who is on the fifth day of his visit to New York to attend the 72nd UN General Assembly session, has so far participated in a trilateral meeting on KRG referendum, conferred with ministers and high-ranking officials of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), attended a meeting in the UN to discuss Syria fate as well as Iran nuclear deal joint commission.

Foreign Ministers of Iraq, Iran and Turkey held a trilateral meeting in New York on September 20, 2017 to discuss the referendum plan of the KRG.

In the meeting, Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iraq’s Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Turkey’s Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu conferred on the Iraqi Kurdistan region’s upcoming referendum on independence slated for September 25, and reached agreement on a number of issues, which has been released as a statement.

Addressing the ACD which its main purpose is enhancing dialogue and cooperation in favor of peace, instability and sustainable development, Zarif emphasized the importance of cooperation among Asian countries in fighting extremism and containing the underlying radical thoughts.

He added that Iran firmly believes that the ACD should enhance cooperation among its member states to address the current challenges more seriously.

It is worth mentioning that Iran is slated to host the ACD assembly in fall 2018.

Speaking at the end of meeting on Syria, Zarif said the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes international attention to humanitarian assistance and reconstruction of Syria. "Iran will also side Syrian people in the reconstruction process."

'The idea of humanitarian assistance to Syria and reconstruction of the country can be taken as a positive move, especially regarding the fact that over recent months, the resistance has gained victories over Takfiri and Daesh groups in Syria and that major portion of Syrian desert has been liberated,' he added.

Meanwhile, Zarif, accompanied by Abbas Araghchi his Deputy for Legal and International Affairs as well as Majid Takht-Ravanchi, his Deputy for European and American Affairs, attended the meeting of Iran nuclear deal joint commission.

All the foreign ministers of the signatories to the international nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also took part, while the UK foreign minister Boris Johnson was absent.

The meeting was took place on Wednesday evening at the request of Federica Mogherini European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

After tge meeting,  Zarif said all but one member of the 5+1 group of countries have stressed full commitment to the implementation of nuclear deal, voicing disinterest in reopening the agreement.
