Iran underlines failure of sanctions policy

5 Aug 2017 - 13:08

FNA - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi declared participation of over 100 high-ranking delegations from different world states and global bodies in the swearing-in ceremony of President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday, and stressed the fruitlessness of the policy of sanctions against Tehran.

"The presence of delegations from 95 world states and 9 international and regional organizations in the swearing-in ceremony of President Hassan Rouhani indicates the world's positive interaction with Iran in the current global and regional situation," Qassemi told FNA on Saturday.

"The sanctions policy in today's world is a failed and fruitless policy," he added.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning signed legislation imposing sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea, according to the White House.

His signature caps a months-long process of passing a sanctions bill that started in the Senate as an effort to rein in Iran, but quickly expanded to target Russia.

Qassemi underscored the need for realism, convergence and common fight against the new challenges threatening the world people, and said, "The only way to come out of the current complicated and dangerous situation of the world is interaction, talks and efforts to fight against extremism and terrorism."

The swearing-in ceremony of Iran's re-elected President Rouhani is to be held at the parliament today afternoon. Many heads of states and top officials from different countries are expected to take part in the event.

Rouhani was re-elected for his second term in the office on May 19, for another four years, sweeping over 23 million or 57 percent of the votes.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei endorsed the decree of Iran's President-elect Rouhani on Thursday for another four-year term in office.

"He (the president) should focus his efforts on administering justice, advocating for the underprivileged classes, enforcing the rules of original Islam, strengthening national unity and dignity, attending to the massive capabilities and capacities of the country, and being outspoken in highlighting the values and principles of the Islamic Revolution," Ayatollah Khamenei said in a decree presented to President-elect Hassan Rouhani on Thursday.
