Iran, Cuba seeking expansion of ties

18 Jun 2017 - 13:39

June 18, The Iran Project – Cuban ambassador in Iran says Havana seeks to bolster relations with Tehran, touching upon the two countries’ great ties in President Rouhani’s government.

Speaking to a reporter on Sunday, Cuban Ambassador in Tehran Gonzalez Quesada stated that Iran-Cuba are already having proper relations, pointing to the visits Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made to Havana last year.

Iranian and Cuban officials’ visits helped the two countries boost their political, economic and trade relations; as a result, the sixteenth session of the Cuba-Iran Joint Commission was held in February 2017 in Havana, Quesada added.

In his 2016 visit to Havana, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed the need for the promotion of all-out relations between the Islamic Republic and Cuba, particularly trade ties, following a landmark nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, adding the two countries share common viewpoints concerning regional and international issues.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who also visited the Cuban capital of Havana in 2016, said he sought to “open a new chapter in bilateral relations with Cuba.”

?It should be noted that Cuban government is now being threatened by the US president saying he is going to cancel Barack Obama’s completely one-sided deal with Cuba by imposing travel and trade restrictions on the island nation.

Speaking to Cuban-American exiles in Miami, Florida, on Friday, Trump ordered tighter restrictions on Americans traveling to Cuba and a clampdown on US businessmen doing business with companies allegedly controlled by the Cuban military.

During his tenure in the White House, Obama worked to enact several changes to Cuban policy. He re-established diplomatic relations with Havana in 2015 and loosened some restrictions on doing business in the country.
