Tasnim – Electronic voting machines are planned to be installed in 145 cities tomorrow as Iran prepares to hold the 5th City and Village Councils elections concurrent with the upcoming presidential vote, an official said on Monday.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Qassem Mirzaee Nekou, an ICT official at the central board responsible for monitoring the 5th City and Village Councils elections said all the necessary measures have been taken to provide the required facilities, including hardware and software, to hold the polls electronically.
The electronic ballot boxes have been prepared and their operators have been trained, he said, adding that the voting devices are planned to be installed in polling stations on Tuesday.
He went on to say that the City and Village Councils elections will be held fully electronically in 145 cities, whose city councils have seven to nine members.
Back in February, Mirzaee Nekou had told Tasnim that 11,000 electronic voting machines will be used for the upcoming City and Village Councils elections.
The City and Village Councils elections are scheduled to be held simultaneously with the presidential election on May 19.
According to Article 7 of the Iranian Constitution, the local councils, together with the parliament, are “decision-making and administrative organs of the State”.
