IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani honored the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics medalists in a ceremony held here on Saturday.
The Iranian athletes took part at the 2016 Rio Olympics in 14 fields of Greco-Roman and free-style wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, boxing, shooting, archery, flat-water canoeing, table tennis, cycling, track and field, fencing, volleyball, judo and swimming.
The Iranian teams won 8 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze), and left Rio with the twenty-fifth in the overall standings. Iran gained five medals in wrestling, two in weightlifting, and one in taekwondo.
The Iranian Paralympics team also gained 24 medals (8 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze).
During the ceremony, the president honored also members of Iran's junior national squash team which managed to notch up four wins at the Asian Junior Squash Team Championships and ranked fifth in this continental tournament.
