TEHRAN – The Iranian Navy’s 25th fleet of warships, comprised of the Larak logistical warship and the Alborz missile-launching destroyer, left for the Gulf of Aden early on Thursday, Iranian media reported.
The 25th fleet was dispatched to the open seas after the return of the 24th fleet of the Iranian Navy to the country to help maintain the security of shipping lanes in international waters.

The 24th fleet, which completed its 72-day mission last week, was comprised of the Khark helicopter carrier and the Sabalan destroyer and entered the Pacific Ocean after passing through the strategic Strait of Malacca for the first time since the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The Strait of Malacca is a narrow, 805 km stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra and is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world from an economic and strategic perspective.

Over 50,000 vessels pass through the strait per year, carrying about one-quarter of the world’s traded goods including oil, Chinese manufactures, and Indonesian coffee.
