TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Expatriates’ Affairs Hassan Qashqavi said Tehran and Kuala Lumpur will finalize an extradition agreement following an upcoming visit to Malaysia by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
“Following a recent visit by Malaysia’s attorney general to Tehran and his meeting with (Iran’s) judiciary chief (Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani) as well as the (Iranian) president’s upcoming trip to Malaysia, the extradition treaty will be finalized,” Qashqavi told reporters on Wednesday.
Under the agreement, nearly one third of Iranian convicts in Malaysia will be repatriated annually, he added.
Saying that 3,000 to 3,200 Iranians are serving time behind bars in other countries, the deputy minister gave assurances that the Islamic Republic will spare no effort to help them return home.
