New homegrown missiles to be delivered to IRGC Aerospace Force soon: Commander

27 Sep 2016 - 17:42

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said a huge number of a newly-unveiled tactical ballistic missile dubbed 'Zolfaqar' will be delivered to his forces in coming months.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Tuesday, Brigadier General Hajizadeh said the mass production of the Zolfaqar will begin by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2016 – March 20, 2017) and the missiles will be delivered to the missile units of the IRGC Aerospace Force.

He further dismissed production of missiles with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers, saying that the Islamic Republic has no need for such missiles.

Zolfaqar runs on solid fuel and can hit targets with pin-point accuracy in a range of 750 kilometers.

The tactical missile, which is capable of evading jamming signals in electronic warfare, will come into service by the end of the current Iranian year.

Zolfaqar enjoys a cluster warhead capable of hitting targets spread over the ground.

The new homegrown missile was unveiled during last week’s nationwide parades marking the Sacred Defense Week.

The first images of the test-fire of the missile have been released by the Iranian defense ministry’s official website.
