Iran’s Rouhani felicitates Muslim leaders on Eid al-Adha

11 Sep 2016 - 22:58

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has felicitated leaders of Muslim countries on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice), which marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

In separate messages to Muslim leaders on Sunday, President Rouhani expressed hope that Muslims would enjoy the spiritual and social benefits of Eid al-Adha and present to the world the true image of Islam, which is based on justice and mercy, through cooperation and harmony.

He also hoped that Muslims would reinforce their unity and cordial bonds and foil all efforts aimed at sowing discord among them.

Muslims traditionally celebrate Eid al-Adha, one of the most important religious feasts, with the sacrifice of animals like sheep, rams, goats and cattle.

The act commemorates Prophet Abraham’s submission to divine order to sacrifice his son, Ismail. Just before sacrificing his son, God provided Prophet Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead after he successfully passed the divine test.

Millions of Muslims around the world will attend the day’s prayers. In Iran, people from different walks of life will go to mosques on Monday to participate in the day's special prayers.
