Iranian professional volleyball team Sarmayeh Bank has pulled off a thrilling victory against Foton Pilipinas of the Philippines at the 2016 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.
On Saturday, Sarmayeh Bank players could establish their dominance on the court early into the 5th-8th semifinal match played in the city of Binan, about 34 kilometers (21 miles) south of the Philippine capital, Manila.
The Iranian sportswomen could accumulate points and surge ahead in the wake of the Foton Pilipinas team’s not much gutsy performance. They rolled to a 25-18 win at the end of the first set.
Sarmayeh Bank volleyball players kept up the momentum in the second set, and could claim the set by 25 points to 18 at last.
The Foton Pilipinas players, having lost two consecutive sets and fearing a straight-set defeat against Sarmayeh Bank, bounced back in the third set and began to notch up point after another. They finally went into the final set 25-12.
The Iranians retook the lead after the interval, and managed to win the decider 25-22.
“We knew that the showdown against the Philippine team would be difficult. The team played rather well and it was fairly tough to overcome it,” Sarmayeh Bank’s captain Zaynab Giveh said after the match.
Sarmayeh Bank women’s volleyball team is scheduled to face Vietnam’s Liên Vi?t Post Bank outfit in the 5th place match on Sunday.
The 2016 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship started in Binan on September 3 and will finish on September 11.
